Description
When Lincoln's Tomb was first constructed, there was a single room at the front of the tomb called Memorial Hall. It was packed with display cases filled with Lincoln mementos; one could even call it junky. However, as time went on, it was evident that Lincoln's increasingly elevated status in history needed a more dignified monument to honor his memory properly.
In 1930 during the second reconstruction of the tomb, the inside of the monument was redesigned. Now called the Rotunda, the designer's intent was to put an emphasis on Lincoln's words and different periods of his life with small reproductions of famous Lincoln sculptures. The walls are attractively finished in different marble colors from four countries and five states and the ceilings gold leafed.
In the Rotunda, there are 16 brown marble pillars representing Lincoln as the 16th President of the United States and 36 bronze marble pillars representing the number of states at the time of his presidency. A bronze working model of Daniel Chester French's famous Abraham Lincoln sculpture in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., is centrally located. A circular interior corridor to and from the Burial Chamber was added, so it was no longer necessary to exit the tomb to visit Lincoln's grave.
Lincoln's Tomb is located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
