Description
The American Flag ripples in the wind in front of the Washington Monument.
The Washington Monument, a hollow Egyptian style obelisk, was built to honor the first President of the United States, George Washington. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
The U.S. National Geodetic Survey remeasured the monument in 2014; it stands 554 feet 7 11/32 inches tall instead of the 555 feet 5 1/8 inch it was thought to be. Constructed of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, at the time it was completed in 1884, it was the tallest structure in the world until Eiffel Tower in Paris overtook that honor in 1889. It is still both the tallest predominately stone structure and the tallest obelisk in the world.
