Description
It took a two-shot vertical panorama with a wide-angle lens to capture this view underneath the Natural Bridge. The bridge is 215 feet high and 100 feet wide, with a 90-foot span between the walls. The center section of the arch is 40 feet thick and contains 450,000 cubic feet of rock weighing in at 36,000 tons. It is estimated to be 500 million years old!
US Route 11, also known at The Lee Highway, passes directly overhead.
This natural arch is what remains of an underground river tunnel through which Cedar Creek flowed, cutting its way through this limestone gorge. From this angle, I think it is easier to visualize it as having been a tunnel at one time.
Natural Bridge located in western Virginia is a National Historic Landmark and a Virginia Historic Landmark. It became a State Park in 2016.
