Artist's Description

The Vandalia Statehouse in Vandalia, Illinois, was the third State Capitol building constructed in Vandalia in 1836. It was used as the Capitol building from December 1836 to July 1839.

During this period, Abraham Lincoln was a member of the House for three sessions of the legislature held in the building. He is said to be the group leader responsible for moving the capital from Vandalia to Springfield.

Vandalia, Illinois, was the Illinois state capital for twenty years, from 1819-1839. After the capital moved to Springfield, this Federal-styled building was used as the Fayette County Courthouse until 1933. It was then restored as a memorial and museum.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
