Description
Located across the intersection from Christ Church in Church Hill, Mississippi is Wagner’s Grocery Store. The building was built around 1837 and first opened as a store in 1870. It is one of the oldest country stores remaining in Mississippi. It is also the oldest known all-wooden heart pine country store that included a post office in the southeastern United States. The doors, glazed glass and shutters seen in this image are all original to the structure. After being in operation for over 125 years, it finally closed in 1998.
Wagner’s Grocery is 18 miles north of Natchez just off the Natchez Trace on the Church Hill Loop. The area was the home of many successful plantation owners and was left virtually untouched by the Civil War.
