Description
The jagged peaks of the Absaroka Mountain range are one of the many captivating geological wonders that stand proudly along the scenic stretch of the Buffalo Bill Cody Byway. This picturesque route winds between Cody, Wyoming, and the iconic East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, offering travelers an awe-inspiring glimpse of nature's artistry etched into rugged stone.
Surprisingly, the tallest summit in the Southwest Absarokas remains unnamed. Wapiti Ridge, a mountain range stretching 30 miles alongside the South Fork of the Shoshone River, reaches its highest elevation near its center at 12,165 feet. In contrast, the Ptarmigan and Citadel Mountains are the sole named peaks on the eastern section of this ridge, yet they stand approximately 200 feet shorter. Wapiti comes from a Shawnee Indian word meaning elk, which is plentiful here.
