The historic Wapsipinicon Mill, a six-story tall grist mill, sits on the edge of the Wapsipinicon River in downtown Independence, Iowa.
In 1867, the Independence Mill Company was formed to buy water power and build this flouring mill. The six-story building and water rights cost $100,000 and began operations in 1870.
Wapsipinicon Mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by its owners in 1975. They continued to work it as a mill until the end of that year and then deeded it to the Buchanan County Historical Society. Today it operates as a museum and is a Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area.
