Description
The Courtroom at West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling, West Virginia, was restored to its 1861-1863 appearance. This room served as the District Federal Court for the Western District of Virginia from 1859-1863. After West Virginia became a state in 1863, from 1863-1907, one of its Civil War functions was to try Confederate sympathizers for treason.
West Virginia Independence Hall was built in 1859 to serve as the Federal Customs House. It was where the pro-Union conventions of Virginia were held in 1861, the capitol of loyal Virginia from June 1861 to June 1863, and the site of West Virginia’s first constitutional convention. The building is a National Historic Landmark.
