The White House of the Confederacy was the Executive Mansion during the Civil War for the only Confederate President of America, Jefferson Davis. Located in the capital of the Confederate States of America, Richmond, Virginia, the mansion was the official residence of Davis and his family from 1861 until he fled the city on April 3, 1865. The Civil War ended just six days later when Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
The White House is also the birthplace of daughter Winnie often referred to as the “Daughter of the Confederacy” and where his son Joseph died after falling from the porch.
Built in 1818 for Doctor John Brockenbrouogh, it is the finest Federal-style home in the city. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
