Artist's Description

An old Aermotor windmill seems to stand guard on the open prairie overlooking Chimney Rock off in the distance.

Located in western Nebraska, Chimney Rock National Historic Site was one of the most famous and recognizable landmarks for pioneers on the Oregon Trail. Chimney Rock is a natural geologic formation. It is a remnant of the erosion of the bluffs at the edge of the North Platte River Valley. Composed of layers of volcanic ash and Brule clay, a slender spire rises 325 feet from a conical base to tower 480 feet above the valley. Chimney Rock was designated a National Historic Site in 1956.
