Description
The Zion Episcopal Church sits on the highest point in Charles Town, West Virginia. It is the third Church to be build in this site, and was dedicated in 1851. The first Church was built in 1818, at which time the older graves and gravestones were moved here from other locations. In 1846 a larger church was built on the site, but it burned down only two years after it was completed.
During the Civil War, the Church was used by the Union for barracks and a hospital. The Soldiers desecrated the interior almost beyond recognition. During the Reconstruction, the Church interior had to be replaced, the steeple was added in the 1890s.
George Washington's youngest brother, Charles, founded Charles Town, and over 70 members of the Washington family are buried in this graveyard, 20 of them born at Mt. Vernon. Notably among them is Colonel John A. Washington, the last owner of Mount Vernon and Lucy Todd Washington, sister of Dolly Madison, who was married to George Steptoe Washington.
