Akaka Falls State Park is located on the Kolekole Stream along the Hamakua Coast drive which is the lush green rainforest side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Not far from Hilo, with an impressive drop of 442 feet, Akaka Falls is more than two and a half times higher than Niagara Falls!
Just a bit of random trivia that I found fascinating….
The ʻoʻopu ʻalamoʻo is an endemic Hawaiian species of goby fish that spawns in streams. These fish have a suction disk located on their bellies that allows them to cling to the wet rocks in the stream and around the waterfalls. These gobies climb down the rocks behind the waterfall and swim out to sea to mature. A mature goby is only about 2.5 inches long. When it is time to spawn, they use these suction disks to climb back up the waterfall to get to the stream. Yes, even the 442 feet tall Akaka Falls!

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
