Description
After a heavy rain and hail storm passed through the area, we went back out into the Nebraska Sandhills to shoot the sunset. The Black Crowned Night Herons were out in force, sitting on the fence posts along the wetlands. I had forgotten how abundant they are on the western end of the Sandhills near Alliance, Nebraska.
The low evening sun highlighted this Night Heron beautifully, and he was not the least bit shy as he posed for the camera.
The Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway starting at Anselmo and running west to Alliance is the center of the Rainwater Basin. The Rainwater Basin, a wetland and native prairie grassland network, is a critical habitat for millions of migratory birds.
