Description
I discovered this cute little burrowing owl in the Prairie Dog Town at Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge in South Dakota.
Burrowing owls are small and sandy colored. They have long-legs and large bright-yellow eyes.
The burrowing owl can be found in grasslands, deserts and other open dry areas with low vegetation. They live underground in burrows they have dug themselves or taken over from a prairie dog, ground squirrel or tortoise.
Unlike most owls, the burrowing owl is active during the day, although they do not like the midday heat. Burrowing owls will hunt on the ground during the day, they do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn like other owls do. They hunt mainly insects and rodents and will fly and even run on the ground when hunting.
