Description
Surrounded by pine trees and blanketed in snow, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart is in a serene setting on the Catholic Bay of Jackson Lake within Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
In 1937, the Catholic Church Extension Society donated $1500.00 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. James Hudson for the construction of this log Chapel in Moran, Wyoming, near Jackson Lake.
By the late 1960s, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart urgently needed repairs. A comprehensive renovation project, along with a small addition on the south side of the building was completed by the summer of 1969.
After enduring harsh winters for more than three decades, the 1969 frame addition of the Chapel showed signs of wear. The original log beams began to droop, causing the roof they supported to bend. Consequently, all elements - the frame addition, log beams, and roof - required replacement. In 2002, Reverend Carl Beavers spearheaded a second renovation with approval from the National Park Service. This project involved installing new log beams throughout, replacing the failing frame addition with a log structure, constructing a new sanctuary, adding a rose window of the Sacred Heart behind the altar, and creating a new entrance. The total expenditure amounted to approximately $450,000.00. The 2002 renovation was funded by a generous donation from a family with ties to both New York and Wyoming, as a tribute to the victims of the September 11 tragedy.
Every summer, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart welcomes thousands of visitors from around the world seeking a peaceful sanctuary for prayer and reflection. Situated within the parish of Our Lady of the Mountains in Jackson, Wyoming, it offers a tranquil space for spiritual contemplation.
