The historic Jefferson County Courthouse in Charles Town, West Virginia was build in 1836 on the site of the 1803 original. The Greek Revival Courthouse dominates the public square at the heart of Charles Town. A town founded by George Washington's brother, Charles.
Two significant American treason trials took place in this courthouse. In 1859, John Brown and 6 of his men were tried here following the raid at Harpers Ferry and hung nearby shortly after. In 1922, William Blizzard was tried and aquitted of murder and treason after leading 7000 coal miners in their battle against the mine owners and federal troops at Blair Mountain in southern West Virginia.
It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and continues to be a working courthouse.
