Artist's Description

Houghton Falls State Nature Preserve protects a picturesque little sandstone gorge along the Lake Superior shore just north of Washburn, Wisconsin, USA.

The upstream gorge is shaded by a canopy of trees and overhanging rocks. This series of cliffs and caves is called Echo Dells.

There is a charming stream that meanders through the site creating a series of small waterfalls that cascade over sandstone shelves into a cove with clear water and a sandy bottom. This is a low flow falls, so it only flows after good rains or when the snow is melting.

Houghton Falls can be found on Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula and is part of the Lake Superior Scenic Byway and the Apostle Islands.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
