Artist's Description

This small log cabin was the Headquarters of then Colonel George Washington during the French and Indian War. The site is notable as it signifies Washington’s first military command. It is the only building to survive from the original Fort Cumberland. The cabin, located at Riverside Park in Cumberland, Maryland, is two blocks away from where it was originally built between 1755-1758.

Washington made use of the cabin a second time in 1794 while he was President when reviewing the troops gathered to put down the Whiskey Rebellion.
