Artist's Description

Adult Hairy Woodpeckers are mainly black on the upper parts and wings, with a white or pale back and white spotting on the wings. Their throat and belly vary from white to sooty brown, depending on the subspecies. There is a white bar above the eye and one below too. They have a black tail with white outer feathers. The female lacks the red patches that are on the back of the males head. They are virtually identical in plumage to the downy woodpecker, except the downy is smaller and has a shorter bill.

75% of the hairy woodpecker diet is comprised of wood boring beetles, caterpillars, millipedes, cockroaches, ants, grasshoppersflies, and also spiders. The vegetarian portion of their diet includes sunflower seeds, grains, nuts, peanut butter, and suet from bird feeders. They consume sap from tree-stems, and are also spotted tapping at sugarcane to lick the sweet juice oozing out.

Interesting fact about the Hairy Woodpecker, they like to work smarter not harder by follo...

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
