Artist's Description
The Historic Tredegar Iron Works, part of the American Civil War Museum in Richmond, Virginia.
Tredegar was the biggest ironworks in the South during the American Civil War, which was a significant factor in the decision to make the city of Richmond the capital of the Confederacy. Tredegar supplied about half of the artillery used by the Confederate Army and made the iron plating for the first Confederate ironclad warship, the CSS Virginia. The works avoided destruction by troops during the evacuation of the city and continued to operate through the mid-20th century.
The Historic Tredegar Iron Works is part of a National Historic Landmark District.
