Description
I can't resist anthropomorphizing this image…
He and his wingman try to look innocent as she yells, "I can't believe you looked when she ruffled her tail feathers!"
In actuality, this is just part of the Sandhill Crane's dance. It gets pretty spirited with all the bowing, leaping, kicking out, and wing flapping that sometimes it's hard to tell if it is a mating dance or fighting.
Dancing is most common during mating season, but Sandhill Cranes dance all year long. The dance is essential in cementing their pair bond. It's how they establish social relationships, announce territorial claims and teach their young.
Unison calls are also part of it, and sometimes it does look like they are yelling at each other.
