The Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC, is an emotional tribute to the soldiers that fought and died in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953.
The centerpiece of the memorial is a 19 man squad on high alert emerging from a forested area in a wedge formation. No matter where you stand at the memorial, the eyes of at least one statue will be looking at you as they search for the enemy in the open area.
These 19 statues were created out of stainless steel, so they reflect off of the black granite wall off to the side. The 19 statues plus 19 reflections total 38 to commemorate the 38th parallel north.
In an attempt to replicate the terrible conditions the troops dealt with during the Korean War, these larger than life statues are wearing ponchos to symbolize the bad weather, and walking through juniper bushes and across granite slabs to represent the rugged terrain.
