Description
Saracen's Tent in Luray Caverns is considered the best cave drapery formation in the world. Appearing smooth and flowing just like a curtain folded by hand, as a drapery formation grows larger, they become longer, thinner, and sometimes even translucent.
This is a three-shot vertical panorama. See if you can find the two people in this image, I first took them out but then realized how staggering the size of this room is when you have a sense of scale. Here's a hint, look on the right. It is not the dark human-like silhouette, that is a rock. They are much smaller than that; thanks to COVID you can see a little white facemask to the right of that rock.
Luray Caverns is the largest cave in the eastern United States. Located in the Shenandoah Valley town of Luray, Virginia, I consider it a must-see if you are visiting Shenandoah National Park. The cave was discovered in 1878 by five local men whose attention had been attracted by a protruding limestone outcropping located near a sinkhole that had cool air rising from it. In 1974, Luray Caverns was designated as a Natural Landmark.
