Artist's Description

After a short hike through the rainforest, we see the late afternoon sunbeams filter through the sea spray weathered trees right along the edge of Waipio Beach.

Located along the Hamakua Coast on the northeast shore of the Big Island of Hawaii, the Waipio Valley is the largest and most southern of the seven valleys on the windward side of the Kohala Mountains. The valley is a mile wide at the coastline and almost six miles deep with a beautiful black sand beach. Bounded by 2,000-foot cliffs, the "Valley of the Kings" was once a favorite retreat of Hawaiian royalty. Waterfalls drop 1,200 feet from the Kohala Mountains to the valley floor, and the sheer cliff faces make access difficult. Although completely off the grid today, Waipio was once a center of Hawaiian life; somewhere between 4,000 and 20,000 people made it their home between the 13th and 17th century.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
