Dam 4 on the Potomac River is near mile 84.6 on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. It provides water for 22 miles of the canal, from mile 84.6 to just above Harpers Ferry at mile 62.3. The water roaring over this dam here is mighty, sending vibrations through the ground.
This hydro-electric gravity dam was built in 1913 and then modified in 1994. It uses a drive belt to transfer power from the Potomac River to turbines providing power to Washington County people. The building on the West Virginia side of the river has captured the water’s power for the past one hundred years.
