Artist's Description

Looking across the Potomac River from to Edwards Ferry boat ramp at Confluence Park in Leesburg, Virginia.

Located just off the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal towpath near mile 30.9, the little town of Edwards Ferry sprung up almost overnight around this ferry crossing and the C&O Canal Lockhouse and Lock 25.

Not much remains here besides the lock, lockhouse, ferry boat ramp, and Jarboe's store ruins. This was the entry point on the canal for agricultural goods coming across the river from Virginia headed to Georgetown.

During the Civil War, the north bank of the Potomac became a militarized border. Edward's Ferry was a strategic hotspot with both the Union and the Confederate troops using the ferry crossing. With the canal's proximity to the Potomac, it was often the Confederate forces' target in an attempt to interrupt commerce. I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change.
