Artist's Description
A double-sided neon porcelain Desoto Plymouth Dealership sign dating from the early 1950s is still attached to the long-closed G&E Tire Company building along Route 66 in Carthage, Missouri.
The building, dating to 1935, has been tied to various automotive businesses, from a service station, a garage, a car dealership, and a tire store.
In the early 1950s, it was Joy Motor Company, but by the mid-1950s, it had changed hands, becoming the John Graue Moter Company. Both of these dealerships sold DeSotos and Plymouth brands of automobiles.
The sign is in beautiful condition. The same can't be said about the building it hangs on. I was shocked that such a valuable sign was still hanging here, but I read elsewhere that the sign will stay with the building and is not for sale.
If you are traveling down Route 66 in Carthage, check out this rare beauty.

About Susan Rissi Tregoning
I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change. My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
