Artist's Description

It was a glorious sunset at the Sergeant Floyd Monument in Sioux City, Iowa.

Sergeant Charles Floyd was the only member of the crew to die during the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the first United States soldier to die west of the Mississippi. Floyd was born in Kentucky around 1782. In 1803, he joined the Corps of Discovery, the military expedition that would explore the Louisiana Territory. The night of August 19th 1804, Floyd became seriously ill with "bilous cholic" which was most likely appendicitis. He died sometime after 2:00 in the afternoon on Monday, August 20, 1804.

This 100 foot high stone obelisk was built in 1900 to memorialize Sargent Floyd and was recognized as the First National Historic Landmark in 1960.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
