Artist's Description

The Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

The USS Arizona is the final resting place for many of the ship's 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives on December 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor. The 184 foot long Memorial spans the mid-section of the sunken battleship. The Memorial was completed in 1961 and dedicated in 1962.

The design concept according to the architect, Alfred Preis:

Wherein the structure sags in the center but stands strong and vigorous at the ends, expresses initial defeat and ultimate victory. The Overall effect is one of serenity. Overtones of sadness have been omitted to permit the individual to contemplate his own personal responses, his innermost feelings.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
