Artist's Description

The Sergeant Floyd towboat was named in honor of Lewis and Clark Expedition quartermaster Charles Floyd, the only member of the Corps of Discovery to die during the expedition. Floyd was buried on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River in what is known today as Sioux City, Iowa.

This diesel inspection ship plied the inland waterways for 50 years as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers construction fleet flagship. After she was decommissioned, she was used as a traveling exhibit and then berthed in St. Louis, Missouri, until 1982, when she was given to Sioux City. Today she is a museum boat, and a Welcome Center drydocked in Larsen Park in Sioux City, Iowa.

Only a few vessels like her remain in existence. She was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
