Description
Located at the intersection of Illinois and Lockport Streets in Plainfield, Illinois, the Opera House Block, also known as the Clock Tower Building, is a beautiful example of Queen Anne architecture featuring an iconic turret.
Constructed in 1899 by Clarence Marks, a prominent figure in both Plainfield's business community and Chicago's trotting scene at the close of the 19th century, this building has a rich history. Following the destruction of the original Opera House in 1889 due to a fire, Marks oversaw its reconstruction and ownership until 1907. During its prime years, the Opera House served as a theater and was home to the Blue Goose Dance Club. The Hastert family later became well-known proprietors of the Clock Tower Restaurant within this historic building; their son would eventually rise to become Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
