Description
A side view of the Portland Mills Covered Bridge from down on the Little Raccoon Creek in Parke County, Indiana.
The Portland Mills Covered Bridge, a single-span covered burr arch truss constructed in 1856 by Henry Wolfe, is the second oldest Parke County covered bridge.
The bridge was originally built across the Big Raccoon Creek and located in the village of Portland Mills but moved to this location on the Little Raccoon Creek in 1961 after the Dooley Station Covered Bridge was destroyed by arson. The bridge began to fall into disrepair to the point that one of the portals collapsed and was closed to traffic in 1982. After surviving an arson attempt, it was restored and reopened in 1996. The truss members remain intact, but the horizontal yellow popular siding has been replaced with pine, the arch is oak, and it has new cedar shingles.
The Portland Mills Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
