Artist's Description
It was a magnificent sunset at Scotts Bluff National Monument in western Nebraska.
Rising over 800 feet above the plains at its highest point, Scotts Bluff is a historic pioneer landmark on the Oregon Trail. This monument is comprised of five rock formations. The two that are seen in this image are Sentinel Rock on the left and Eagle Rock on the right.
The trail which passed through a gap in the center of the bluffs is Mitchell Pass. Although this pass was tortuous and hazardous, many emigrants preferred it to following the North Platte River bottom on the north side of the bluff.
Scotts Bluff was a significant milestone for many wagon trains on their way westward as both a navigational marker and as an indicator for where the Great Plains gave way to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change. My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
