Artist's Description
A young alligator asleep in the Cypress Swamp.
On my short hike around the Cypress Swamp, I spotted 5 small alligators. They were all around 4 or 5 feet long.
The Cypress Swamp is a top 30 site along the Natchez Trace Parkway. It is located at mile marker #122 near Jackson, Mississippi.
Just a few fascinating alligator facts…
The gender of an alligator is determined by the temperature of egg incubation. If the temperature is less than 86 °F, they will all be females; if the temperature is greater than 93 °F, only males will be produced; and a temperature from 86°F - 93 °F produces a mixture of male and female. Baby alligators typically stay with their mother for 1 to 3 years. Age does not define sexual maturity, length does. The American alligator is sexually mature at about six feet long.

About Susan Rissi Tregoning
I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change. My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
