Description
The iconic Swinging Bridge at Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis, Wyoming.
Hot Springs State Park is the oldest and most visited state park in Wyoming. When the plans for the Hot Springs were finalized in 1916, the Swinging Bridge was built across the narrows of the Bighorn River to provide safe access to the Thermal Springs. Due to the river's dangerous conditions during certain times of the year, especially in spring, when snow melt causes flooding, the river crossing is perilous.
The pedestrian bridge was deemed unsafe and was condemned in 1980. However, when the bridge was restored in 1992, the two original 1916 towers were preserved. As Wyoming's longest suspension bridge, it remains an iconic feature of Hot Springs State Park.
