Description
The Mississippi State Capitol, located in Jackson, Mississippi exemplifies Beaux-Arts classicism in architecture. This new building replaced the old statehouse in 1903. Designed by Theodore C. Link of St Louis, Missouri, the building is 402 feet wide with a central dome rising 180 feet above ground level. The exterior walls are Indiana limestone, and the base and stairs are Georgia granite. The drum of the dome is limestone colored terra cotta; it is surrounded by a limestone colonnade. The eagle atop the dome is eight feet tall and 15 feet wide, it is copper gilded with gold leaf.
The Mississippi State Capitol was designated as a Mississippi Landmark in 1986, a National Historic Landmark in 2016, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
