Description
Look closely it is pouring down rain in this image of the Palace Theater. You would never guess it by the beautiful blue sky. The Historic Palace Theater is located in downtown Hilo, Hawaii.
Architects Davis & Fishbourne designed the theater in the Beaux-Arts style or “Grand Old Tradition”. It opened in 1925 at the peak of the heyday for American movie palaces. The Palace was built on a scale that had never been seen outside of the capital city of Honolulu, and was always the grandest theater on all the neighbor islands. The building’s facade is an elegant neo-classical design executed in stucco with wood molding accents.
The theater closed in 1984, but in the 1990’s the building was taken over by Hilo’s Downtown Improvement Association in an effort to save and restore the building. The Palace reopened in 1999 and is still in use today as an arthouse. The Palace Theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 1993.
