Description
On March 5, 1880, the first passenger train leaving Cincinnati for Chattanooga was nicknamed the “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” This historic occasion opened the first major link in public transportation between the North and the South. The Choo Choo was operated by the Cincinnati Southern Railroad, America’s first municipal railway system.
It was in 1941 that the big band/swing tune “Chattanooga Choo Choo” was recorded by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, making this little steam engine train famous. The song “Chattanooga Choo Choo” was the first song ever to receive a gold record in 1942. It sold 1.2 million copies.
The Choo Choo is now located at the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The hotel, formerly known as Terminal Station is on the National Register of Historic Places and a member of Historic Hotels of America.
