Description
The historic 1884 B & O Railroad Oakland Train Station in Oakland, Garrett County, Maryland, is considered one of the finest examples of a Queen Anne-styled railroad station remaining in the state.
In 1876, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad built the large elaborate Oakland Hotel in Oakland, MD. In 1884, they added the B&O Railroad Station, a short distance away to support the hotel, and Oakland soon became a destination resort area for the Victorian-era wealthy.
While the hotel no longer exists, Oakland’s Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Station was saved from demolition and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The city of Oakland purchased the station in 1998 and, with assistance from the State of Maryland, fully restored it. Today, the station is known as the Oakland B&O Museum.
