Description
Home of Indiana's oldest volunteer fire department, the Fair Play Fire Station in Madison, Indiana, was constructed initially in 1875 as a trolley barn for the Madison Street Railway Company. Their third firehouse, the Fair Play Fire Engine and Hose Company, purchased the building in 1888. They still use it today.
The bell tower isn't original to the building. It was added during the 1888 rehab when converting it from the trolley barn to a fire station. The "Little Jimmy" weathervane, the company's trademark, sits atop the three-and-a-half-story bell tower. It's Little Jimmy II now. The original Little Jimmy, now displayed inside the firehouse, was in place from 1889 to 1996. He was retired after storm damage.
Fair Play Fire Company No. 1 is part of Madison’s Historic District. First listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and later expanded, Madison, Indiana's National Historic Landmark District now includes over 1800 buildings in approximately 133 blocks, making it the largest contiguous Historic District in the United States.
