Description
This boarded-up house called the Flory House is part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Located in Four Locks, Maryland, near Lock 49, the building was the Four Locks Post Office from 1878-1903. In that time frame, eight different postmasters worked and lived here. Mary Flory was the only female postmaster, and she served the longest term, eight years from 1885 to 1903.
A small but busy community called Four Lock grew up around Locks 47 through 50. The town had two general stores in its heyday—two warehouses where the canal boats loaded and unloaded near locks 49 and 50. A dry dock to repair the barges at lock 47. A mule barn, post office, one-room schoolhouse, and about a dozen houses. When the C&O Canal closed in 1924, most everyone moved on to find jobs elsewhere.
Today, the Four Locks area is a major recreational area in the Little Slackwater above Dam 5. It is a popular area for boating and fishing.
