Description
The Stop Gate Wench House sits over the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal near Dam 4 at mile 84.6.
While this building looks a little like a covered bridge, it’s not. This building held the stop gate. The gate would be lowered to prevent floodwaters from entering the canal and damaging the towpath. It was used to maintain a consistent level of water so it doesn't exceed a traveling speed of two miles per hour down the canal.
