Description
The Old State Capitol sign is attached to the wrought iron fence encompassing Illinois's Old State Capitol grounds in Springfield. The sign is colorfully backed with a large plot of Black Eyed Susans. While the Old Capitol building can be seen in the background, I have cut off the dome since it is under restoration.
As an important 180+-year-old historical artifact, the Old State Capitol building is again under restoration. Ironically, the last time I was here coincided with the building's previous restoration, and the dome was covered in scaffolding then too. As a result, I have not seen nor photographed the exterior of this Illinois state treasure since I was a child.
The dome is the final holdout in completing a $1.65 million restoration project on the building. While the building reopened in October of 2021, complications with the plaster in the dome have delayed removing the scaffolding surrounding it. The state hopes to unveil the dome by October 2022. Fingers crossed, I’ll still be here and, finally, get my shot. Sadly, these beautiful flowers will be gone by then.
