Description
In 2014 Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, reopened the cemetery’s original entrance for foot traffic and placed a replica of the main gate and archway here.
On May 4, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln’s Funeral Cortege passed through this gate, traveling to the Old Receiving Vault, where his remains would be temporarily placed until his tomb could be constructed. At that time, the cemetery was located outside of town, two miles north of the Capitol building. At just over 28 acres of rolling hills and oak trees, it was an idyllic country setting.
Today, Oak Ridge Cemetery has become the largest municipal cemetery in Illinois. The cemetery has over 75,000 interments on 365 acres, and because of Lincoln’s Tomb, it is the second-most visited cemetery in the country, after Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Nearly one million visitors pay their respects to Abraham Lincoln and his family yearly.
