Description
Simple handmade wooden crosses dangle from the fence in offering along the path to El Santuario de Chimayo.
When visiting the shrine at Chimayo, the holiest pilgrimage site in the United States, it is customary to bring an offering, such as a cross, candle, rosary, personal note, photo of a loved one for which you wish prayers.
The Santuario de Chimayo, between Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, on the High Road to Taos, has earned a reputation as a healing site, with many claims that the church’s backroom’s dirt can heal physical and spiritual ills. As a result, over 300,000 people make the pilgrimage to Chimayo every year.
