Description
Tucked behind the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and across from Panther Hollow Bridge is a small Mediterranean-inspired garden outside the beautifully restored Phipps Hall of Botany in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Schenley Park.
In 1900, Henry Phipps donated $30,000 for Botany Hall to be built so public school teachers would have a space for botany class after class field trips to the Glasshouse. The Roman-styled brick building has a Spanish red tile roof, and Pompeiian-style brick was completed in 1902.
It was renovated in the late 1990s and is still a site for educational programs and events. It is also the location of Botany Hall Kitchen, which serves as a community service facility and holds various public cooking demonstration classes.
