Description
Located on the Lutheran Theological Seminary grounds in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Gettysburg Seminary Ridge Museum is housed in this historic Federal-style building constructed in 1832.
Schmucker Hall was originally built as the home of the Lutheran Theological Seminary under the leadership of Reverend Samuel Simon Schmucker. It served as a military observation post and strategic artillery position during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 and was transformed into a field hospital during this time, providing care for over 600 wounded soldiers.
During the 1960s, the Adams County Historical Society took over the historic building to prevent it from demolition. For 52 years, it served as a research center and museum until it was renovated in collaboration with the Seminary Ridge Historic Preservation Foundation. On July 1, 2013, coinciding with the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War Battle at Gettysburg, it reopened as the Gettysburg Seminary Ridge Museum.
